Family road trips: where to go and how to get there

The weather is finally improving and we have two bank holiday weekends coming up in May. What better way to celebrate than with a fantastic all-British big family road trip?!

Whether you have a destination in mind or not, loading the car up with the kids, the dog, a picnic and a frisbee, and hitting some of the UK’s incredible roads, is a fantastic way to spend a day.

At WeBuyCarsForMore, we have picked out some of the best road trips you can make without straying too far from our native North East of England.

Plus, of course, we’ve got some outstanding cars in stock that’ll help you make that journey in style, not matter where you’re going!

Alston/Hartside Pass

This is one of our favourite roads and, while technically not in the North East, it does start not far past Hexham, and is well worth going out your way for. Pack up a picnic and head to the Hartside Top cafe, (or buy food when you get there: but beware, they only take cash!) – and enjoy some of the best driving and views the UK has to offer.

Kielder Forest Road

This is an uncovered/gravel road, so you might not fancy it if you’re particularly precious about your car’s paintwork. However, it is fantastic Land Rover Defender country, basically an accessible public rally stage. Note that there is a strict 20mph speed limit (and a £3 toll), but that’s ok: it’s more about the views across incredible countryside than about speed and thrills.

Cragside Estate Drive

We’ve picked out Cragside here, but really, any of the North East’s National Trust properties are worth a family road trip. Wallington Hall, Gibside and Cragside are fantastic with attractions for all the family, and surrounded by great driving roads.

What to drive…

And, of course, we have picked out some of the cars in our current stocklist that are best suited to a family road trip. Check out these beauties – all geared up perfectly for lugging loads and enjoying the ride.

2008 S LAND ROVER DEFENDER 2.4 110 XS DCB 5D 122 BHP

This Defender won’t get you anywhere quickly, but it will get you anywhere. This Defender is a beast. It sits a family of five very easily, and has that huge rear cabin for all your gear. This is just ridiculously cool. £19,990.

2012 12 FORD S-MAX 2.0 TITANIUM TDCI 5D 138 BHP

When it comes to MPVs, Ford are one of the market leaders. Great engines, tight handling, loads of room: it’s a great recipe for a car that helps move the family around in comfort. If Ford could somehow collect the family holiday memories that have started and ended with an S-Max, it’d have some seriously great marketing material on its hands. £9,490.

2009 W AUDI A4 AVANT TDI S LINE DPF 5D 141 BHP

Big Audis are a relatively common sight on our roads now, so it’s easy to overlook, or take for granted, the things they do so well. This A4 Avant looks sharp (only the 09 plates give its age away) has a huge boot, boasts plenty of diesel power and returns decent MPG. It comes with four-wheel drive and has typical Audi levels of refinement. It’s hard to go wrong with an Audi A4! REDUCED: £8,999.
