True blue: two stunning cars from completely different worlds

They are both German thoroughbreds, finished in striking blue. They cost about the same – £23K and £24k respectively, and they can both do the dash to 60mph in a shade over five seconds.

They are both legends in their own lifetime and contain incredible naturally-aspirated, driver-focused engines, the likes of which are becoming increasingly scarce on our roads.

But that’s where the similarities end.

For despite their likenesses, here we have two cars from the opposite end of the motoring spectrum: the only question is, for the money, which way would you go?

The contenders

In the blue corner, we have an Audi S6 Avant.

And in, erm, the other blue corner, we have a BMW Z3M.

Audi S6: Wolf in sheep’s clothing

The Audi is all about stealth. It’s what’s known as a ‘sleeper’ – to the untrained eye, it looks very much like a standard Audi estate. A motorway load-lugger to move the family, the dog, and all your luggage, up and down the country in comfort and style.

And, of course, it can do all of those things, but underneath that bonnet is a 5.2-litre, V10 engine that came straight from a Lamborghini Gallardo. It has uprated brakes (thank goodness) and stiffer suspension. It’s a supercar in sensible clothes and we absolutely love it.

BMW Z3M: Wolf in wolf’s clothing

On the other hand, there’s no chance of mistaking what the BMW Z3M is all about. The bodywork has a number of aggressive design touches that separate it from the common or garden Z3, which give away the fact that there’s an awesome 3.2-litre, 316bhp engine hiding in there. Those quad exhaust pipes are another clear hint.

This is a special car, and they are particularly rare: all well-kept BMW M-cars eventually go up in value, and the scarcity factor with this one makes it no exception. A guaranteed future (and current) classic.
